CPI Shows No Change for July 2012, Up 1.4% From A Year Ago

The July Consumer Price Index, which measures inflation, was unchanged from June, the 2nd month in a row. The reason was electricity costs which dropped -1.3%. Gasoline increased 0.3% for July. Removing food and energy, inflation increased 0.1% for the month. Below is CPI's monthly percentage change.

 

Consumer Price Index had No Change, Core CPI up 0.2% for June 2012

The June Consumer Price Index, which measures inflation, was unchanged from May. The reason was gasoline prices, which dropped again, this time -2.0% from last month and up 1.7% for the year. Cheaper gas offset other increases. Below is the graph for CPI's monthly percentage change.

 

PPI Increases 0.1% for June 2012

The Producer Price Index, or wholesale inflation, increased 0.1% in June 2012 for finished goods. Energy alone decreased -0.9% with gas actually increasing 1.9%. Core PPI, which is finished goods minus food and energy, increased 0.2% and is the 4th month in a row for an increase. Food alone increased 0.5%. While this is wholesale, retail shoppers beware, price increases are usually passed onto consumers.

February PPI Shows a 0.4% Increase

The Producer Price Index, or wholesale inflation, increased 0.4% in February 2012 for finished goods. Energy alone increased 1.3% with gas jumping 4.3%. Core PPI, which is finished goods minus food and energy, increased 0.2% and is the 3rd month in a row for an increase. Food alone declined -0.1%. While this is wholesale, retail shoppers beware, price increases are usually passed onto consumers.

Inflation is Zero for the 2nd Month in a Row Yet Highest Year Since 2007 Says the December 2011 CPI Report

The December Consumer Price Index, which measures inflation, had no change, or zero from last month. This is the second month in a row for zero inflation. The flat line was caused by a -1.3% energy decrease. Gas alone decreased -2.0% in a month. Food increased 0.2%. For the year, not seasonally adjusted, the Consumer Price Index for all Urban Consumers (CPI-U) has risen 3.0%.

Inflation Indicator CPI Is Zero for November 2011, 3.4% for the Last 12 Months

The November Consumer Price Index, which measures inflation, had no change, or zero from last month. The flat line was caused by a -1.6% energy decrease for the month. Food increased 0.1%. Gas alone decreased -2.4% in a month and food at home, or groceries, decreased -0.1%. Eating out increased 0.3%. Core CPI, or price increases minus food and energy costs, rose 0.2%.
